♪ good morning. i'm theresa garcia live in gilroy where there was a drug seizure of gigantic proportion. hundreds of millions of dollars worth. this say bust that links beyond this county. we'll explain what they found just ahead. >> also in the headlines, a wild night for residents of a quiet millbrae neighborhood. a suspected drunk driver smashes into three parked cars and a house. >> passengers aboard an american airlines plane evacuated after a hijack threat. still trying to get out of sfo but the threat turned out to be false. >> a live look from downtown san francisco. looking from the southeast, you can see the bay bridge but not the top of it because the thicker clouds are rolling in and the mist and drizzle is building and cooler conditions for the weekend. i'll talk about a warming trend for next week.

>> we had a busy past hour but now that it's 5:00, i can friday light. the bay bridge toll plaza, now no delays and, of course, $6. >> good morning on this friday. 5:00. thank you so much for starting the day with us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. this morning three suspects held in santa clara county jail charged with running one of the largest methamphetamine operations local drug agents have ever seen. theresa garcia joins us live from where the busts took place. i guess, theresa, they're finding out there may have been more going on. >> how much more, we'll get into that. let me detail where we are. a rural area of gilroy a couple miles east of the gilroy outlets, a home with a lot more space behind it and a place here that neighbors said they had no idea what was going on behind closed doors. veterans drug agents say they're shocked with the drugs, a street value between 100 to $150 million what they seized. this exclusive video taken by

the dispatch shows room after room filled with buckets and bins of the purest form of crystal methamphetamine. during the thursday early morning bust, drug agents from multiple agencies seized 450 pounds of meth and 40 pounds of cocaine. the sacramento sheriff department led this bust aafter launching an investigation a year ago. the investigators believe it was the center of a massive drug ring which begins in mexico. neighboring residents have no idea any of this was going on. >> i'm shocked. there was hardly any traffic here. hardly anyone out there. i'm really surprised. >> these guys are all carrying guns and they're being much more brazen about protecting their investment. >> investigators believe the suspects arrested are mid to upper level players in the mexican drug cartel. they're not naming which one. they also believe cockfighting was going on in the backyard. cages and chickens were also seized from the home. immigration holds are on three

men who remain in custody at the santa clara county jail. these are photos of the suspects. they're all mexican nationals who have been living at the home for about a year. now, authorities also raided six other locations in sacramento and modesto yesterday. they say all are tied to the three suspects at this gilroy home. live in gilroy, theresa garcia, abc 7 news. >> theresa, thanks a lot. police are trying to figure who called in a hijacking threat that turned out to be false on an american airlines flight yesterday morning. the flight was isolated on the tarmac about three hours just before it was scheduled to take off. authorities searched the plane and questioned all 153 passengers on board. federal agents grounded the plane after alameda police told them about a call received by a desk clerk at the hampton inn hotel. >> my front desk clerk received the phone call. it lasted for about 45 seconds.

the phone call went on like a rant. very jumbled. kind of made no sense. the only thing he was able to gather from it was american airlines flight 24 and hijack. >> two passengers were taken away in handcuffs but they were quickly released. they were not arrested. one passenger says he believes the people were racially profiled because they have pakistani passports. >> millbrae police have arrested a suspected drunk driver after they say he smashed into three parked cars and a house overnight. investigators say the suspect lost control of his truck just before 12:30 on sequoia avenue. the house did not suffer structural damage. the family was home at the time. nobody was hurt. the driver was taken away on a stretcher by paramedics. there were no other injuries. >> oakland police are investigating a report by a woman who says she was raped in a downtown parking garage. it happened at a garage at clay and 14th street right behind city hall about midday

yesterday. the victim thinks she may have seen her attacker recently near 14th street. she described him as missing a front tooth. he apparently also wore large, dark sunglasses and large black head phones around his neck. >> san jose officials have declare you had the nonprofit that runs several downtown buildings in default of its management agreement. management duties with the nonprofit team san jose includes the san jose convention center, the center of the performing arts and the san jose civic auditorium. the news reports city officials have restricted team san jose access to public funds for unexpectedly overshooting its budget by more than $750,000. >> san francisco officials are trying to get an exemption to state environmental law in time for a deadline to bring the america's cup race to the city. san francisco has six weeks to present a formal proposal to host the cup which was won by larry ellison's team in february.

mayor newsom has briefed environmentalists on a proposal that would cover facilities for yachts, gear and support services. without legislative help, the mayor indicates it's likely the city will not be selected to host the cup. >> work near the trans bay terminal in san francisco resumes tonight as crews demolish a ramp to interstate 80. the street closes at 10:00 tonight. not going to be reopening until 10:00 monday morning. a temporary facility opened last weekend as crews began tearing down the old trans bay terminal. it's part of a $4 billion project to build a new transbay terminal scheduled to open in 2017. when you see that animation they have of what that new facilities going to look like, it's extremely exciting. according to the animation, it's going to be spectacular. >> grand central. >> that's right. >> you know what, it's 5:06. time to start thinking about the weekend. >> we've been thinking about it since monday. mike, what's going on weatherwise. >> cooler weekend and all starts

today. let's talk about the conditions at 8:00. you still see drizzle and mist, especially along the coast. the mist more likely around the bay and higher elevations. everybody under cloudy skies still in the 50s. by noon sunshine breaks out first into the east bay valleys and into the south bay and eventually into the north bay. still crazy, cloudy conditions around the bay itself with mid to upper 60s. up in the north bay mid-60s to near 70. east by valleys near 80. by 4:00, clouds basically back to the coast. san francisco upper 50s to low 60s there. sunshine around the bay with mid to upper 60s. up in the north bay 69 san rafael and 74 santa rosa. down in the south bay mid-70s. the east bay valleys, warmest weather, upper 70s to low 80s. your weekend and today's cooling trend extends into tomorrow. tomorrow will be the coolest day of the forecast with if we're lucky 80 inland. upper 60s around the bay. 6 degrees warmer sunday and

cancel thousands of flights in april 2008. that's according to the "wall street journal." the fine stems from improper electrical wiring around the landing gear of many of american planes. the airline was forced to ground its entire fleet of 300 md-80 jets until mechanics fixed the problem. >> americans are dipping into retirement savings. a record number of workers made hardship withdrawals from their retirement accounts from the second quarter. the number of workers borrowing from their account is at a ten-year high. >> good morning. we begin your "moneyscope" report with fresh evidence that the economy has stalled. asian markets are falling this morning after a down day on wall street. that followed a report showing initially claims for unemployment benefits rose 12,000 last week to 500,000. that's the highest level since november. the spike in unemployment is a sign employers may shed jobs

this month for the first time this year. intel has made a major acquisition. it's buying software security firm mcavee for $7.7 billion. it would help intel improve the security of its chips which are currently inside about 80% of the world's computers. flu shot season is starting early this year. the nation's biggest drugstore chain, rite aid and walgreens are already offering them in most of their stores and cvs will begin selling the shots next week. the early response to last year's swine flu outbreak. >> the paper savings bonds are coming to an end. the last paper bonds issued this year in 2011. that's next year. all savings bonds will be sold, kept and redeemed online. all part of the treasury's plan to save money and go green. you thought i wasn't awake, did you.

type of temperatures. here's your highlights or low lights, depending how you look at it. sunshine today, a little slower than yesterday. cool breeze. it arrived and it's going to drop our temperatures today and into tomorrow and bring cloudy conditions back to the forecast tonight with more mist and drizzle. the coolest weather again tomorrow the warmest mind and tuesday. here's what we're watching, that area of high pressure yesterday that brought us more summer-type heat. it's starting to move away. and this low is moving in, going to get hooked with the jet stream that's going to pull some cooler air and as it rotates counterclockwise around it going to push it deeper into our neighborhoods and turn sharply cooler especially today and tomorrow more so. i think you'll really notice it tomorrow. a lot of us will be out tomorrow and that's why. temperatures mid to upper 50s and down in the mid to upper 70s down in the south bay with low 80s around saratoga and los gatos. on the peninsula low to mid-70s. millbrae getting caught in the that breeze and drop you down to 68 after being in the 70s yesterday.

we are in the 60s along the coast. today upper 50s. you see the trend of the cooler temperatures. 63 downtown, 64 south san francisco, sausalito. 65 upper 50s along the north bay coast with mid to upper 70s through your valleys. oakland getting caught in the breeze, dropping back into the 60s with richmond and berkeley. low to mid-70s elsewhere. he east bay valleys mid 70s. brentwood may hit upper 80s to near 90. hollister 81, gilroy 84. morgan hill 85. inland still pretty warm with sunshine. the closer you get to the bay, more cooling you will feel. watsonville 69. santa cruz 72 and monterey 73. the cloud cover develops and the drizzle. the north bay valleys, the rest of us mid to upper 50s. accu-weather seven-day forecast. 4 to 6 degrees cooler tomorrow but then we rebound on sunday and the air starts to dry a little bit and we have

temperatures that will warm 4 to 6 degrees and another 6 degrees on you monday. the warmest weather monday low to mid-90s inland and upper 50s along the coast. frances, a new accident? >> yeah, just reported. the chp on their way right now. southbound 280 from the john daily boulevard off-ramp and it may be blocking lanes. a live shot at the golden gate bridge where you can see fairly clearly across the span. so it's friday light right now coming out of marin county. let's check out the bay bridge. this time a slightly closer shot. traffic flowing well in both directions. all the road work on the upper deck cleared. no delays eastbound as well. san mateo bridge looking good this friday morning. 14 minutes is the drive time from 880 to 101 in both directions. and in the south bay, 101 at 880. headlights northbound and that's fine out of morgan hill, even gilroy all the way up into san francisco. you can always find out if anything changes. just go to abc7news.com and click on the bay area traffic

forecast in just a few minutes. >> also looking pretty cool on the roads now with a live shot at the bridge toll plaza. no delays. an earlier accident in the san francisco area has been cleared. nothing to slow you down in terms of accidents this morning. >> and state offices across california are closed today in the first of what could be many furlough fridays. state workers are being forced to take unpaid days off because of the budget battle still going on in sacramento. >> good morning, everyone. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm kristen sze. thanks for joining us. the story gets more disturbing after local drug agents busted the largest methamphetamine operation they've ever seen. abc 7's theresa garcia is live in gilroy where the investigation continues. theresa, what else did they find? >> not only drugs but illegal activity involving animals but as for drugs, completely shocked with the size of the find with value of 100 to $150 million.

we have video shown taken by the gilroy dispatch. it shows room after room filled with buckets of bins of the clearest, highest quality form of methamphetamine. during the thursday early morning bust at the home, drug agencies seized about 450 pounds of meth, more than 40 pounds of cocaine and two firearms. they also seized cages and chickens from the home and believe cockfighting was going on in the backyard. as for the drugs, they say their find may have saved lives. >> a lot of dope. you start talking about 400 pounds, and that's pure. that's about 95 to 98 percent pure methamphetamine. that could have messed up a lot of people's lives. >> the sacramento county sheriff's department led the bust after launching an investigation more than a year ago. they believe the house was the center of a massive drug ring which begins in mexico and the suspects arrested are mud to upper level place in a drug cartel they are not naming. they have put an immigration hold on three men who remain in

custody at the santa clara county jail. these are the booking photos. they are all mexican nationals who have been living at the home for about a year. authorities also raided six other locations in sacramento, also in modesto yesterday. they say that all are tied to the three suspects here in gilroy and also say more arrests are expected as this investigation unfolds. live in gilroy, theresa garcia, abc 7 news. >> thanks, theresa. authorities are checking out a hijack threat that turned out to be false. they searched the plane, questioned all 153 passengers on board. federal agents grounded the plane after alameda police told them about a call received by a desk clerk at the anthem inn hotel.

>> the pilot came on a couple times and eventually said there was a security threat that they felt was credible. >> everybody new something was wrong but nothing was wrong so we're home safe. >> two passengers were taken away in handcuffs but were quickly released. they were not arrested. one said they were racially profiled because they had pakistani passports. >> the city's third fatal shooting in less than 24 hours. this latest homicide after midnight. a man in his twenties was shot and killed outside the city housing complex near alameda boulevard and 4th street. police had been van casting the neighborhood trying to find possible witnesses. last night a 19-year-old man was killed in the oceanview neighborhood and early yesterday morning a 26-year-old man was fatally shot during an argument in the tenderloin district. >> in richmond police hope witnesses lead them to two men that walk up to a 16-year-old boy and shot him to death in

broad daylight. it was after the boy waited for his mother to pick him up. he finished a new student orientation. a transit bus pulled away before the shooting and there were many other potential witnesses. >> this is a very busy major thoroughfare 10:00 in the morning so there's a lot of people out. that's why we're hoping we'll get witnesses and people come forward to tell us what happened. >> i saw a man run by and he had a gun in his hand. 25, 30, blue jeans and a black hoodie. >> police did find a gun about a block away from the scene and now are conducting lab tests to see if these the one used in that shooting. >> the santa clara sheriff's office is investigating the death of a concertgoer in a mountain winery in saratoga. witnesses say a man jumped off the roof near the lighting rig and dove on to the stage landing right next to the lead singer. some thought it was part of the act. doctors in the audience tried

unsuccessfully to revive the man. >> furlough fridays return to california today and that means you're going to see closed signs hanging up in places like the dmv. 150,000 state workers are being forced to take an unpaid day off. this after the state supreme court ruled furloughs can rule until it decides whether governor schwarzenegger has the authority to impose them. the days will save the state about $150 million per month. the supreme court will hear early arguments for and against furloughs next month. >> menlo park will lose their bid to move the rail route from the peninsula to the east bay. one route will come up the peninsula but then turn east at the dumbarton bridge and miss their communities. but in a tendtive ruling yesterday, a sacramento judge says he intends to deny the request. oral arguments in the case are scheduled for today when the judge is expected to issue a final ruling. the rail authority praises the

decision. >> firefighters are making progress against a brush fire in riverside county. flames have spread over 25 acres and the fire's only 15% contained at this time. the blaze broke out shortly before 8:00 last night. it threatened about a half dozen homes but overnight the fire has been burning southwest away from the buildings and those homes are no longer at risk. the cause of that fire? under investigation. >> we haven't heard mike say lately -- >> has said a lot of things lately. some for better, some for worse. hasn't said rain, hasn't said tropical storm around here. >> or firefighter danger. >> what do you say though? >> i want to talk about cooler weather. >> you've been saying that a lot. >> i know. unfortunately. still rings true. maybe i don't want to talk about it but i'm paid to tell what you the forecast is either way. good morning to you. you'll notice this morning that the clouds are starting to roll

in. in fact, here we are at 8:00. you can still see plenty of cloud cover, the mist and drizzle as we talked about developing now. thickest along the coast and around the bay. we'll find some of it on the bay bridge and also up into the golden gate bridge. 8:00 still cloudy and the 50s. noon we see breaks in the cloud cover a little slower than yesterday but pretty warm already. mid to upper 70s in the east bay valley. low 70s in the south bay. mid-60s to near 70 in the north bay and mid to upper 60s around the bay. by 4:00 we have clouds around the coast, a little thicker than yesterday. mid to upper 60s around the bay. head to the north bay, south bay, low to mid-70s. east bay valley upper 70s to low 80s. so temperatures will drop about i'd say 3 to 6 degrees today. another 4 to 6 degrees tomorrow as it will be the coldest on saturday. breezy, a little drier and warmer sunday. and then temperatures could be 10 to 15 degrees warmer compared to saturday on monday and

pounds of crystal methamphetamine and more than 40 pounds of cocaine yesterday during a drug bust. those agents filling buckets and bins with the purest, highest quality form of meth. the drugs have a street value of somewhere between 100 and $150 million. >> police are trying to determine who called in a hijacking threat that turned out to be false on an american airlines plane at sfo yesterday morning. two passengers were taken away in handcuffs but they were quickly released. a photo by one passenger, he says he believes the people were racially profiled because they had pakistani passports. >> police hope witnesses lead them to two men who walked up to a 16-year-old boy and shot him to death at a bus stop in broad daylight. happened yesterday while the victim waited for his mother to pick him up. those stories at 6:00.
